Leave it new UCLA head coach Rick Neuweasel Neuheisel and the Bruins “marketing machine” to start making noise in The City of Angels NOW. The ad is a bold move, and it’s trying to lay the foundation for the future of UCLA football. Bravo.

UCLA fans are tired of getting shown up by their cross-town rivals. Maybe the rest of the Pac-10 will be thankful too, if the Bruins (or any other conference team) can finally upend the mighty USC Trojans. USC head coach Pete Carroll and his staff should be concerned that a proven recruiter and talented coach (Neuheisel), with a brainiac offensive coordinator in Norm Chow (formerly of SC), could be the “great equalizer” in Los Angeles in the not-too-distant future.

However, Coach Neuheisel is no stranger to stirring to the pot. A great, but controversial coach, Neuheisel will have the Bruins turned around sooner, rather than later. He’s willing to take risks… and it often leaves opposing teams ground up into the turf physically and mentally, along with unclassy sideline behavior that he has exuded over the years. The 1996 Cotton Bowl first comes to mind. Much to the ire of Oregon coaches and fans, a fake Colorado Buffalo punt was called by Neuheisel late in the game, after victory for CU was well in hand. Screams classy, doesn’t it? He also created the mythical “Northwest Championship”, and his players made up championship t-shirts (white T’s with permanent markers), checking off the Washington Husky wins over the other three teams, Washington State, Oregon State, and Oregon. Needless to say, Neuheisel hasn’t won many fans outside of his own programs.

But has he learned from his past discretions off the field as well? Neuheisel turned the Colorado football program into a semi-power, but also turned it upside-down, as they were put on probation after he left. Neuheisel also kept the Washington Huskies relevant with upper-tier bowl games. But trouble followed him again, when Neuheisel was fired in 2003 for betting on NCAA basketball. But “Slick Rick” came out of litigation squeaky clean anyway, when he collected a $4.5 million settlement from the NCAA and Washington.

The question of the season is, can he distance himself from the past, and put UCLA back on the map? Only time, and the patience of Bruin fans, will tell. If Neuheisel gets a sliver of success in SoCal, we might be seeing a little sideline “f-you love” to “Ricky” from Coach Carroll:

This video is terrible, and by that, I also mean terribly funny. As you've surely heard by now, Jose Guillen had to be held back from going after a fan on Tuesday night that had been heckling him all night and said "the magic word" according to the Kansas City Royals right fielder.

We assume the attendee in question was a Royals fan because who else would subject themselves to a game in Kansas City. And we also assume he was drunk, because, well, he's a Royals fan.

Who knows what was said, probably something about someone's momma having a higher batting average, but either way it's a good close up angle, albeit shaky, of the mad man that is Jose Guillen.

Seriously, if you're going to taunt someone, try to harass one who isn't crazy enough to actually come into the stands and beat you silly.

In other news, Royals manager Trey Hillman picked a good spot for this show.

“I was actually in the toilet, so I didn’t see it,” Hillman said. “Managers do have to use the restroom and I guess I picked a bad time to be in the restroom. … There’s no sense on commenting on it.”

Happy College Football Day! Most of your teams aren't playing until Saturday, but tonight we get real actual football on college campuses. I can't be any happier about that.

Before we start making some new highlights, I thought we'd take one last look back on gems of 2007. We can only hope Mike Gundy's rant gets topped. I'd settle for someone even making it into the ballpark.

Michigan falls to Appalachian State in the first game of the season, on Big Ten Network's debut.

The coaching rant to end all coaching rants. Gundy is 41 now, but still a man.

Quite possibly the game of the year. Kentucky 43, LSU 37 3OT

Trick play of the year, mostly due to the look on Steve Spurrier's face.

Upset of the year, volume 2. Jim Harbaugh gets the best of Pete Carroll.

Because beating Notre Dame never gets old. Navy finally wins.

There's plenty more highlights, both those were the images that stood out for me in one of the more entertaining college football seasons in recent memory. The fun starts tonight. Enjoy.

JD Drew's back injury came as a huge blow to the Boston Red Sox. They are currently in the middle of the Wild Card race, leading the Twins by 2.5 games, and are also trailing the Rays by 3.5 games in the AL East. Drew has been outstanding this year, for the Sox, even though he has cooled off considerably as of late. He's still 3rd in the AL with a .408 OBP, and 6th in OPS, widely considered to be the most important offensive statistic. His average has dipped to .280, but he has 19 HR, 64 RBI, and nearly a 1:1 ratio of walks to strikeouts.

However, Drew is on the DL with a back injury. This isn't the first time he's been hurt. Drew has an extensive history of injuries, and that has always been a concern with him. He has had issues with his wrist, his knee, his quadricep, his ankle, and of course his back. He has averaged less than 120 games per year, since he started playing "full-time" in 1999.

In order to essentially replace Drew, the Sox acquired Mark Kotsay from the Braves in a post-deadline waiver deal. Kotsay is in the middle of a rather average year for him, hitting .289 with 6 HR and 37 RBI in 88 games.

The most puzzling part of this deal is that in replacing their oft-injured right fielder, the Red Sox picked up a guy with an interesting injury history of his own. Kotsay missed time earlier this year, coincidentally with a back injury. This hardly seems like a wise "insurance policy" for the Red Sox while Drew is gone.

However, if Kotsay is able to stay healthy and contribute as expected, Drew's time on the DL probably won't cost the Sox all that much. Drew is certainly a better hitter, but Kotsay is an excellent fielder, and will provide the team with a slight upgrade in that sense.

The pitching should be enough to keep the Sox afloat enough to maintain their lead over the Twins in the Wild Card race, but the loss of Drew, even if only for a short period, puts a serious damper on their chances of catching up to the Rays. Even with injuries to Carl Crawford and Evan Longoria, the Rays are playing very well, and are simply winning too many games for the Red Sox to catch up at this point. If the Red Sox are to beat the Rays, it will probably have to be in October.

Johan Santana wasn't exactly lights-out this time for the Mets, but their offense was able to get it done, and their bullpen was uncharacteristically good in a 6-3 win over the Phillies.

Santana gave up 3 early runs, but Carlos Delgado homered twice and drove in three, and was one of three Mets (along with Carlos Beltran and Jose Reyes) to have 3 hits.

For the Phillies, Rudy Seanez and Brad Lidge combined for only one inning, but managed to give up 2 runs each, wasting a 2-run HR by Ryan Howard. He is now tied with Carlos Quentin for the MLB lead in HR's with 36.
